How a Minister of State works in Parliament
A Minister of State is a Member of Parliament who also belongs to the Council of Ministers. Most of their visible parliamentary work is ministerial rather than that of a private member: giving oral and written replies to questions on subjects assigned to them, laying papers on the Table of either House, and piloting business when authorised.

Constituency
Tumkur and its region
Tumkur (PC-19) is one of Karnataka’s 28 Lok Sabha constituencies. It lies in Tumakuru district, north-west of Bengaluru. The district administration records three sub-divisions (Tumakuru, Tiptur and Madhugiri) and ten taluks. In 2024 the constituency recorded 1,303,451 votes, of which V. Somanna received 720,946 (55.31%) according to the Election Commission of India.
Several documented activities concern the constituency and its surroundings. As Minister of State for Railways he has:
- reviewed the Tumakuru–Rayadurga and Tumakuru–Chitradurga–Davangere new lines (Oct 2024);
- flagged off the Vande Bharat halt at Tumakuru (Aug 2024) and a new halt at Nittur (Apr 2025);
- opened three road under bridges in the district that replaced level crossings (Feb 2026).
