Bengaluru City Corporation, Vijayanagar division
His elected career began in municipal government. According to his Lok Sabha profile, he was elected to the Bengaluru City Corporation from the Vijayanagar division in 1983 and re-elected from the same division in 1988.

Three terms for Binnipet, and a first ministry
He entered the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1994 from Binnipet, a Bengaluru constituency. He won it three times in a row, each time under a different banner: Janata Dal in 1994, independent in 1999 and Congress in 2004. Between 1996 and 1999 he served as a minister in the Karnataka Government.

Govindarajanagar, and a change of party
After the 2008 delimitation of constituencies, he was elected from the new Govindarajanagar seat in Bengaluru, as a Congress candidate. Contemporary reporting records that before the 2009 Lok Sabha elections he resigned the seat, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and entered the Karnataka ministry. In the August 2009 by-election for Govindarajanagar he was not elected.

The Upper House, and portfolios in government
From 2010 he sat in the Karnataka Legislative Council, the state’s Upper House, for two consecutive terms. The official record shows him in the Government of Karnataka from June 2009 to May 2013. His recorded portfolios include Food and Civil Supplies, Housing, and Muzrai (religious and charitable endowments).

A fifth Assembly term and Cabinet rank
In 2018 he returned to the Assembly from Govindarajanagar, his fifth election win to the House. From September 2019 to May 2023 he was a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Karnataka. His recorded portfolios in that period are Housing, Infrastructure Development, Horticulture and Sericulture.

In the 2024 general election he contested the Tumkur parliamentary constituency as the BJP candidate and was elected, according to the Election Commission of India. It is his first term in Parliament.

Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti
He was sworn in as a Minister of State in the Union Council of Ministers on 9 June 2024. The next day the President’s Secretariat notified his portfolios: Minister of State in the Ministry of Jal Shakti and Minister of State in the Ministry of Railways.
